Honoring Mrs. Milta
Garavalia
On Tuesday night, August
18, the Royalton Public Library Board honored the late Milta
Garavalia, long time Library Board Trustee and volunteer. After
a brief ceremony, a charcoal portrait of Mrs. Garavalia was unveiled.
The portrait will hang in the library. It was done by Carmen
Clark of Herrin.
Mrs. Garavalia was a second grade teacher in Royalton for many
years and had taught two generations of many Royalton families.
She was instrumental in the formation in 1981 of a Reading Room
housed in the old Royalton School, and became one of the first
Library Board Trustees when the Library District was formed.
She also took her turn as a volunteer librarian during the early
years of the library's existence. She was a proud spectator when
the ribbon was cut for Royalton's new library on September 8,
2001.
Attending the dedication were Mrs. Garavalia's brother, Erv Coppi
along with his wife Marie and their daughter Carla. Before unveiling
the portrait, Library Board President Pat Horn introduced several
former and present library board trustees and two librarians
who spoke briefly of their personal associations with Mrs. Garavalia.
Those speaking were Pat Knox, Debbie Buckingham, Renee Lefler,
Joe Blazine, Bess Schoen, Sonnie Gulley, Carla Bogdajewicz, Sharon
Houston, Tina Carpenter, and Pat Horn. Mr. Coppi also said a
few words after the portrait was unveiled.
